Beware who you hire for your “professional” photos!

Today, a set of “professional” photos taken at a family event and was posted (& went viral) on social media as a “Photoshop Fail”.   The family posted –

We paid a photographer, who claimed to be a professional, $2-250 for a family photo shoot..  ..She said the shadows were really bad on the beautiful, clear, sunny day and that her professor never taught her to retouch photos.

Some of the images bore a watermark: IMagery by Lesa Hall.  At first I thought she must be a beginner and started to feel a little sorry for her, but considering her audacity to actually deliver these and to accept money for them..  According to her website, she’s been a photographer for several years, but few photos are displayed.

No, this isn’t just a “Photoshop Fail”, as many news outlets were claiming.  Lesa apparently hadn’t learned how to take outdoor photos so that you don’t have to deal with the contrasty shadows.  She hadn’t learned how to pose people so they look their best.   And I only see rather stiff, staged photos, none showing the family in their normal interactions and bringing out their character.

But the worst of all is having the gall to actually deliver and accept money for this trash.  Not only did the photographer disappoint her client by failing to record photos that the family might have enjoyed viewing over many years, but every event is a once-in-a-lifetime event (they may do it again next year, but this year’s event is over and done), and so the damage cannot be repaired.

If you’re a brand-new, just graduated “professional photographer”, please be responsible and work under an established photographer (better still – work for several photographers) for at least a year before venturing out on your own.  Even then, you should do these –

  • Advise your client honestly about your experience and abilities
  • Offer a “satisfaction guaranteed” refund policy (and don’t spend the money until the client is satisfied!)
  • Never stop learning your craft

If you’re shopping for a professional photographer – “caveat emptor”!  If you’re in the Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs area and are looking for budget-minded, yet professional photography – we offer a “Satisfaction Guaranteed”, cheerful refund policy, and we take our work seriously.  And though I firmly believe the photography should happen in the camera, I am very experienced with Photoshop for enhancing your photos.
